During our recent trip to the Outer Banks, my good friend Mark VanDyke and I visited the North Carolina Aquarium in Manteo NC on Roanoke Island on a day when we had poor weather for anything else. The shark aquarium is always my favorite part of the aquarium, as I find sharks to be truly amazing creatures.
I always enjoy the challenge of shooting these type of shots in dark places like this, and this was the hardest aquarium yet that I have visited. It was extremely dark and required a lot of panning with slow shutter speeds at fairly high ISO settings. Getting a sharp shot in these conditions requires a good panning technique and camera settings that make the best compromises, and getting a quality image requires a camera that handles higher ISO settings well. The Nikon D700 was made for high ISO use, and I think the results were excellent considering what we were working with.
